Out-of-control Tesla crashes into homes, leaving behind trail of destruction in Orange

ORANGE, Calif. (KABC) -- The 22-year-old driver of an out-of-control Tesla who crashed into multiple homes, leaving behind a trail of destruction in an Orange neighborhood overnight, suffered a medical emergency.

The driver lost control of the car and veered off Chapman Avenue just before midnight Wednesday, according to the Orange Police Department. The car smashed through a brick wall and crashed about 20 feet down an embankment, damaging several homes on Cadbury Drive.

"I'm just shocked. I couldn't figure out how the car came this quickly. I thought it came from the front entrance and came around, and they said no, it came from the wall there," one resident said.

Video from the scene showed widespread damage to several of the townhomes, including shattered windows and debris scattered across the street. The Tesla came to a crashing stop in the corner of a garage, which sustained the most damage.

Many people were in their homes at the time, but none of them were hurt.

Joan, the woman who lives in the home with the most damage, didn't want to be appear on camera but told Eyewitness News she immediately rushed outside.

"I just heard a big bang and, you know, my house kind of shook," she said.

She found the driver, the only person in the Tesla, dazed but not badly hurt from the collision.

Details about the driver's medical emergency were not available. Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

"All I could think about was this kid in the car. I just pray that he's OK. You know, all this is fixable."
