BALDWIN PARK, Calif. (KABC) -- Nearly a year after a veteran officer and a 43-year-old father were gunned down in a Baldwin Park neighborhood, officials on Monday released harrowing audio and bodycam video that shows the shooter and police exchanging gunfire.
Eduardo Roberto Medina Berumen, 22, is accused of killing Officer Samuel Riveros and Darius Wong. Berumen is facing several charges, including two counts of murder.
Riveros, 35, was a nine-year veteran of the Baldwin Park Police Department. Wong was on his way to a housewarming party before he was fatally shot.
On May 31, 2025, police responded to reports of a shooting after Wong was gunned down in the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue.
The gunman opened fire the moment the first officer arrived, according to bodycam video released by Baldwin Park police. Footage shows that officer returning fire and then racing to help a second arriving officer injured by glass after a patrol car was shot.
Riveros' body-worn camera footage captures him arriving at the scene, warning residents to get out of harm's way. Riveros was shot by Berumen as he moved along the sidewalk, Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert Lopez said.
"After striking the officer, Berumen continued firing rounds at the other officers, preventing them from immediately pulling the wounded officer and the initial victim to safety for medical treatment," Lopez said.
Officers raced to help Riveros, who was taken to a hospital. Riveros was pronounced dead by medical staff after arriving at the hospital, Lopez said.
Officers then turned their attention back to Berumen, who had been hit by gunfire but was still armed with a rifle.
"Drop the gun!" officers can be heard yelling.
Berumen was eventually taken into custody. He is due in court Thursday.
Baldwin Park police released the bodycam footage in a 15-minute video.
